Proposed Itinerary
- Africa Overland
SOUTH AFRICA
For the first few 6-8 weeks we will take in the sights of this country – Kruger
NP, Zulu culture, the independent countries of Swaziland & Lesotho,
and the Boer and Zulu battlefields, the garden route between Durban
and Cape Town, etc.
CAPE TO CAIRO
After visiting Cape Agulhas - the southern most point of the African
continent - we leave Cape Town for the big trip north in early April.
We'll head up the west coast into Namibia for the Skeleton Coast,
the big dunes and on to Etosha NP in the north of the country. Then
up to the Okavango River and follow that down into Botwana to the Okavango
Delta. From their back into the Caprivi Strip of Namibia to fabulous
Victoria Falls (say mid May – 6 weeks & 6000km).
Then it is into Zambia and to Lusaka. From there east into Malawi,
around the great lake of Lake Nyasa and into central Mozambique (say
end of May – 4 weeks & 3500km).
Travelling up the coast we'll enter Tanzania on a small ferry across
a major river. Then we'll head west to the Selous Game Reserve and
then back east to Dar es Salaam and magical Zanzibar (say late June – 3
weeks & 3000km).
From there it is out in to the Serengeti, the Masi Mara, Kilamanjaro
and onto Nairobi in Kenya (say mid July – 3 weeks & 1500km).
From Nairiobi we'll head north into Ethiopia to Addis Ababa and then
the historic route through Ethiopia to Gondar. If we can get our visas
we'll cross the border into the Sudan and travel onto Khartoum. (say
mid August – 4
weeks & 4000km).
Then it is into Egypt, the Nile, Aswan, Luxor then out into the Sahara
and the remote oasis of Qasr Farafra (or there abouts). Get to Cairo
(around early to mid September – 3 weeks & 2700km).
We'll spend a week in and around Cairo, travel over to the Red Sea,
before heading back west to historic Alexandria where we'll then head
along the coast to Tobruk in Libya. However travelling in Libya requires
a guide and a 'security guard' to be with us, so we'll only spend a
short time before crossing into Tunisia where we'll wander the desert
and the historic sites along the coast (mid September to mid October – 4
weeks & 3000km)
EUROPE
Then we'll catch the ferry from Tunis to
France. A quick crossing to the UK where we'll see family and friends
before storing the vehicle and flying home (arriving In London towards
the end of October - 2 weeks & 1500km).
Cape Town to London
Total weeks – 30 weeks
Total distance – 28,200km
