KENYA - Southern Kenya, Nairobi, Tsavo & Amboseli National Parks

Southern Kenya (pics from left to right) – Neil, Helen & Viv at the Thorntree Café at the Stanely Hotel in Nairobi, Ron & Viv at the Stanley Hotel where they had been 23 years ago on their first trip to Africa; the pleasant camping area at JJs (Jungle Junction) in Nairobi; our new found South African friends, Gill & John, who we've been bumping into during our trip north, enjoying lunch with Neil and Helen.

Southern Kenya (pics from left to right - top to bottom) – Our pleasant camp at the Hunters Lodge, on the way to Tsavo NP – just don't camp under the trees; the spectacular scenery in Tsavo NP; river crossing in the park, with the water still flowing well; the sign at the start of the short walk to Mzima Springs; a Sykes monkey – they always look worried; the beautiful Mzima Springs and its local hippos; our vehicle at one of the track junctions in Tsavo; Viv shooting some video footage of one of the many lava flows that criss cross Tsavo – this one on the way out to Amboseli.

Southern Kenya (pics from left to right - top to bottom) Amboseli National Park – while it has some fantastic swampy/marsh areas, away from them the landscape is dry and dusty; a herd of buffalo cross our track; our camp site at the public camp site in Amboseli – the only one, now run by the local Maasai community; a hyena leaves a waterhole; there were lots of animals around the swamps – zebra, wildebeest & elephant – in the background, behind all the cloud, is Mt Kilimanjaro – we never saw it!!; the large, dry expanse of Lake Amboseli.

Southern Kenya (pics from left to right - top to bottom) Amboseli National Park – Maasai Village – near the public camp site – we did a tour of the village where people are still living their traditional lifestyle – the money from tourists helping to keep their nearby school going and the community fed; Neil & Ron joining in on the welcoming dance; the mud and dung huts that are their homes – cool in summer and warm in the colder months; Neil doing some negotiations for the purchase of his spears; Viv with Johnathan, our guide in the Village – a really nice guy - and a couple of bits of bead work – ear rings and a neck band to add to her collection back home.
