MOZAMBIQUE
- Chiponde to Nampula and onto coast - Island of Mozambique; Pemba
Mozambique (pics from left to right
) - the Piper family live in Cuamba - Phillip & his wife
Nicola and kids - they rescused us,
gave us a bed for the night, a meal and some very friendly and welcoming
hospitality; the slow dirt and pot holed road to Nampula with some
very impressive granite peaks along the way; a huge load of bamboo
poles on a push bike - a hard way to make a living.

Island
of Mozambique (pics from left to right ) - the 3.5km bridge across to the
Island of Mozambique; our beach camp - looked
pleasant enough, but it did have some drawbacks; we just fitted
through the bollards to get onto the bridge to the Island;
the village at the southern end of the island.
Ilha de Mozambique (pics from
left to right ) - the fort of Sao Sebastiao, constructed in
the late 16th century; the Chapel of
Nossa Senhora de Baluarte,
built in 1522, is situated at the northern end of the island and
is the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere.

Ilha de Mozambique (pics from left
to right ) - the fort of Sao Sebastiao and its water cistern;
the governor's palace built in 1610;
the grand construction of the old hospital built around 1620; just
one of the many narrow streets and dilapidated buildings.

Ilha de Mozambique (pics from left
to right ) - the grand, rejuvenated building of the bank with
Neil & Fred, & Wilson (our guide for the day),
on its
door step; our vehicles waiting in the street at the bank; how
to buy petrol, Mozambique style!
Traditional white-face painted girls near Pangane.

North along the coast - Pemba to
Pangane and onto the border with Tanzania (pics from left to
right ) - the delightful looking Pemba Beach;
what was once the main road in the old part of town at
Pemba; onto Pangane and our almost idyllicc amp right on the
water's edge;
the busy fishing village just down from our camp at Pangane;
boat building traditional style; dugouts ready to sail.

North along the coast - Pangane and
onto the border with Tanzania (pics from left to right ) -
Viv with a couple of new fellows;
one of the 'cash' businesses for the locals - crushing
rocks by hand; a traditional mud/thatch hut.

North along the coast - Pangane and
onto the border with Tanzania (pics from left to right ) -
the road to the border was slow;
had to wait all day for the ferry to arrive with the high
tide and it took some doing to get the vehicles on.
